UK Researchers Test Feasibility of New Camera that Detects Potential for Ulcers on Diabetics

Researchers in the UK are testing a new device, still in clinical trial, that could detect ”hotspots," or areas where an ulcer is likely to occur. The device is about the size of a camera and could potentially prevent diabetic foot ulcers by allowing podiatrists to apply care to a potential hotspot. Right before the skin breaks down, it tends to heat up, which is what the device detects. An ulcer is an open wound, which is generally not a problem for most healthy people. However, an ulcer on the foot of a diabetic can be serious due to poor blood circulation; this affects many diabetics. Due to reduced blood flow, even the smallest of ulcers can potentially not heal and can become infected. This can lead to amputation if the infection is severe enough. Due to the fact that the device is still in-trial, it may not appear in podiatrists’ offices in the US for some time. High Heels are Bad for Your Feet

While high heels are considered to be fashionable to many, they are known to be bad for your feet. The higher the heel, the greater the pressure on the balls of your feet. Los Angeles Clippers’ Milos Teodosic Suffers Foot Injury

Point guard Milos Teodosic of the Los Angeles Clippers recently suffered a plantar fascia injury in his left foot. He sustained the injury during the second quarter of the Clippers and Phoenix Suns game in which the Clippers won handedly, 130 to 88. The injury will take Teodosic off the court indefinitely. It is unknown just how severe the injury is as well. Teodosic had scored 11 points and eight assists during the time he playing.

Weight-Loss Surgery Found to Improve Rheumatoid Arthritis Symptoms

A recent study published in the Arthritis Care and Research journal found that those who are obese and have rheumatoid arthritis may benefit greatly from bariatric, or weight-loss, surgery. While the study needs more research before conclusive results can be firmly established, early statistics note huge improvements in patients.  Out of the 53 patients who have rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and undergone bariatric surgery, only six percent were found to have moderate to severe disease activity 12 months after surgery. Six years after having the surgery, 74 percent of the patients were classified as being in remission. This contrasted with the only 24 percent achieving remission with RA medications before surgery.  While these results are excellent, there are many factors that are unknown; one such factor is whether bariatric surgery is more effective in reducing RA symptoms than diet and exercise. Furthermore, bariatric surgery may potentially lead to osteoporosis, a condition characterized by weak and brittle bones.. Ultimately, for those who have RA, are obese, and considering bariatric surgery, there are many factors that have to be taken into account. Florida Gators Wide Receiver Sprains Ankle

Wide receiver Tyrie Cleveland of the Florida Gators sprained his right ankle during the Vanderbilt Commodores vs Gators game. Cleveland sustained the injury during the fourth quarter. While the Gators won 38-24, Cleveland’s injury will leave them without their leading receiver. Tyrie has had 15 catches, 326 yards, and 2 touchdowns thus far. It is unknown for how long Cleveland will be out, but it will most likely be several weeks with this kind of injury.
